You’re Invited to Kindred Camera Exhibition & Workshop Series: Sensitive Beings by Artcrossing!

This winter, Sensitive Beings Exhibition & Workshop Series comes to Kindred Camera at The District Docklands, bringing a touch of warmth to the cold season. Showcasing 13 artists from China, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and the United Kingdom, the exhibition spans painting, photography, installation, ceramics, sound, and moving image.

Through a program of events and workshops, Sensitive Beings invites visitors to explore questions about emotions and individuality in a world shaped by rules and order. ‘Are we destined to suppress our feelings to fit in, or can our sensitivities become the outlines of our souls?’

The experience aims to reawaken the senses and embrace the moments often seen as “fragile” — the ones that may hold our truest and most unique imprints. Every feeling, memory, and echo becomes part of the theatre of life, where the most authentic self is free to be felt, heard, and expressed.

About Workshops & Events

Emotion-Inspired Painting Workshop: Inner Atlas — Mapping My Emotions

This creative workshop invites participants to connect with their emotions through body sensations and visual expression. With guided prompts and examples, you will learn to turn inner experiences into unique visual artworks. The session encourages you to pause, notice your emotional state, and transform it into a tangible “emotional map” using markers, pens, and paper.

No prior art experience is needed — this is a safe, exploratory space for self-discovery.

  • Dates: Saturday, 30 August 2025 & Sunday, 14 September 2025
  • Time: 5.30pm – 7.30pm
  • Price: $39 (+ GST)
  • Capacity: Maximum 20 participants

Chinese Scent Workshop: The Scent Within — A Journey of Sensing

This sensory workshop uses the sense of smell to guide participants into a meditative experience, inviting you to connect with your most authentic self. Through Chinese incense culture, you will engage both scent and mindful presence. The session begins with a smouldering incense demonstration — including xingxiang (walking incense) and the ritual of passing the censer — to link breath with awareness.

You will then explore smoke-free incense appreciation, using abdominal breathing to detect subtle fragrance notes, while hearing stories about the history and meaning of incense. The experience concludes with making your own aromatic pouch, blending Yin-Yang and Five Elements theory with both Eastern and Western scent traditions.

  • Date & Session Language: Sunday, 31 August 2025 (Chinese) and Sunday, 7 September 2025 (English)
  • Time: 5.45pm – 6.45pm
  • Price: $69 (+ GST)
  • Capacity: Maximum 15 participants
  • Notes: Some materials have distinctive aromas; not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women or individuals highly sensitive to scent. Please avoid wearing strong fragrances to maintain harmony in the space.

Artist Sculpture Workshop: Contours of Me — A Portrait in Wire and Shrink

In this two-hour workshop, participants explore the connection between body and emotion through both drawing and construction. You’ll start by sketching a symbolic body part — such as an eye, hand, scar, or dream — onto shrink plastic, then use a heat gun to watch it transform in shape and texture. Next, you’ll create a wire structure that expresses movement or emotion, assembling your shrink plastic piece into it to form a small, personal sculpture. The process embraces fragmented forms and open space, celebrating the beauty of what’s incomplete. In the final stage, you’ll give your work a title and display it.

No art experience is required — only curiosity and a willingness to express.

  • Date: Saturday, 6 September 2025
  • Time: 5.30pm – 7.30pm
  • Price: $39 (+ GST)
  • Capacity: 20 participants

Artist Workshop: Rice Painting with Vivian

Join artist Vivian in a unique Rice Painting workshop inspired by her Chinese heritage and the healing effect of comfort food — plain rice congee. Since 2020, Vivian has been exploring the potential of rice in material and artwork.

This Rice Painting workshop is chemical-free, meditative, and healthy for kids and adults to participate in. Rice Paint is 100% edible as it is a mixture of rice congee and various food powders. You won’t find this recipe for rice paint anywhere on the internet. Join Vivian at the workshop and learn how to create your own rice paint that is healthy and fun.

  • Date: Tuesday, 9 September 2025
  • Time: 6.30pm – 8.00pm
  • Price: $39 (+ GST)
  • Capacity: 8 – 20 participants

Artist Workshop: Rice Clay Sculpture Making with Vivian

In the workshop, you’ll learn how to create a brand new, sustainable and organic material from scratch — rice clay. Inspired by her Chinese heritage and the healing effect of comfort food — plain rice congee, Vivian Qiu has been exploring the potential of rice in material and artwork since 2020.

Rice clay is a mixture of cooked rice and embroidery floss. The process may be a bit messy, yet very meditative. After dehydrating it under the sun naturally, the rice clay becomes stiff and hard. If you hold it against the light, you can see the magical texture of rice clay due to translucency.

Rice clay can be made into many beautiful objects — from bowls, to sculpture pieces, and even jewellery.

  • Dates: Saturday, 13 September 2025
  • Time: 5.30pm – 7.30pm
  • Price: $59 (+ GST)
  • Capacity: 8 – 20 participants

Beyond Identity®: The Void — Closing Night Performance

In the midst of chaos, the artist will present an immersive performance and facilitate participants to experience an interactive contemporary dance on the closing night of the exhibition.

Through Butoh and trance-inspired movement, we gently invite you to explore your existence beyond the five senses.

As the scent of incense lingers, tea leaves a quiet aftertaste, and the space softens into an ethereal realm, you will slip into the depths of the subconscious to listen to the silence within.

Open new dimensions of imagination, sensing your new selves and others, and nourish the subtle joy that lives in stillness.

  • Dates: Saturday, 16 September 2025
  • Time: 6.30pm – 8.30pm
  • Price: $65 (+ GST)
  • Capacity: 6 – 20 participants
